Polyethylene

Polyethylene

Polyethylene (PE) is one of the most widely used plastics in the world. It is a polymer made from the polymerization of ethylene (a hydrocarbon derived from petroleum or natural gas).

Key Properties:
  • Lightweight and flexible
  • Excellent chemical resistance
  • Good electrical insulation
  • Water-resistant
  • Durable and tough
Types of Polyethylene:
  1. Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE):
    • Soft, flexible
    • Used in plastic bags, film wraps
  2. High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE):
    • Stronger and more rigid
    • Used in bottles, containers, pipes
  3. Linear Low-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE):
    • Strong with good flexibility
    • Used in packaging films

Uses:

  • Plastic bags and packaging materials
  • Bottles and containers
  • Pipes and tubing
  • Household goods (buckets, toys)
  • Insulation for wires and cables
Advantages:
  • Low cost
  • Easy to process
  • Recyclable
Disadvantages:

  • Non-biodegradable
  • Environmental pollution if not managed properly
